My First Home Server as a Rookie – Part 1

The beginning of my new IT project

Motivation

During the past few years, the relevance of data has become bigger and bigger. And so has their size. The quality images and videos offer today is incredible, but with that comes the problem of storage shortage. Furthermore, I love to share pictures I took with my camera with my friends and family. This forces me to pay for a Google one subscription in order to obtain another 100GB cloud storage. Even though this works quite well, it cannot be the long-time solution. I need a space where I can store all my data privately and share it with anybody I want.

Moreover, entertainment industry has grown as well and with that came various subscriptions for countless streaming services. As a student, I cannot afford them. A centralized media server could solve all my problems. Not only could I store and stream videos, but also podcasts, music and books – everything downloaded legally of course.

And finally, what is an aspiring IT geek without a proper home server? You simply must have one of these at home in order to be part of the club. So although there is much more – these reasons are already enough for me to take up the challenge.

First plans for implementation

As a first step, I must do some research in order to find some cheap hardware online. I think I will spend some time on platforms like ebay and Ricardo in the next few days. It would be ideal if I found some cheap old desktop PC that I can use as my first home server build. It is important to me that the system is not too noisy and that it does not devour too much power. Probably I will buy an old PC and set it up with Linux.

Next, my plan is to install Docker on the system so that I have the opportunity to create containers for all the services I need. Like that, I can save resources and have a broad range of services to choose from. To name only some of them, I will probably install Plex, PiHole, nextcloud, Home Assistant and homepage. If you have any further suggestions, feel free to let me know by leaving a comment or through the contact form.
